WIEF IdeaLab 2015
Parkroyal, Kuala Lumpur
08.00 AM - 06.00 PM
11 - 12 August 2015
The rise of startups around the world has revealed to us that a small number of individuals with a large amount of drive can bring upon great change to our society.
Big names that we all recognise today – Facebook, Google and Amazon – were once startups. In merely two decades, they are among the most valuable companies in the world. They have created millions of jobs and transformed millions of lives.
Startups have allowed us to move away from the old top-down consumption model to a new collaborative model, where every member of the society has an equal opportunity to share opinions, contribute ideas and shape market trends. With the startup concept, as long as you have a great, feasible idea, you stand a chance to succeed. This helps create a more level playing field and eventually translate to a better income distribution.
This very quality and culture driven by startups is what the WIEF Foundation treasures as we strive our best to help shape a more inclusive business ecosystem and a more resilient global economy.
With the WIEF Idealab 2015, our focus is to build a robust network and support system for the startup community here in Southeast Asia. With the ASEAN Economic Community coming into effect by the end of this year, the region will be integrated into one single market of 600 million people with a free flow of services, investments, capital and skilled labour. Hence, it is also timely that we give special attention to the development of startups to further strengthen the growth potential of this region.
Now, a comprehensive programme has been put together, relevant parties and experts have been mobilised, and investors from around the world have flown in and ready to invest.
We are all set and ready to let the startup revolution begin here in Southeast Asia.
Tun Musa Hitam
Chairman, WIEF Foundation
